Do Online Piano Lessons Really Work?

By Mirco Lieber, MMag. (MDW Vienna) · October 11, 2026 · 5 min read

Yes, when lessons are live, one-to-one and the camera is set up well. Over Zoom the teacher sees your hands, posture and touch, corrects in real time and adapts pace and pieces to you. Many students also value that there is no commute and that lessons can be recorded.

What does an online piano lesson look like?

You and your teacher are connected live over Zoom, one-to-one and in real time. You play, the teacher listens and watches, interrupts when needed and demonstrates exercises. Questions in between are welcome at any time. After the lesson you get clear practice instructions.

What works very well online?

Where are the limits?

Playing together in real time is not possible over Zoom because of small audio delays. Instead, the teacher demonstrates and you play it back. With headphones, stable internet and a well-placed camera, almost all disadvantages can be avoided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a teacher correct my hand position over Zoom?

Yes. With a camera that shows your hands and keyboard, the teacher sees posture, fingering and touch and corrects in real time.

Are online piano lessons worse than in-person lessons?

Not automatically. What matters is live guidance, one-to-one teaching and good technology. Many students report that the lessons never feel impersonal despite the online format.

Do I need special equipment?

A device with camera and microphone, stable internet and a piano or digital piano are enough. Headphones and a second camera angle help.

Can I record the lessons?

Yes, lessons can be recorded so you can review between sessions.
