Why Adults Often Learn Faster Than Children

It sounds counterintuitive, but I've seen it play out hundreds of times in my teaching studio: adults frequently progress faster than children through the first year of piano lessons. The reasons are straightforward.

Adults bring self-discipline and the ability to focus on a single problem for sustained minutes. A child depends on external motivation; an adult arrives with an internal drive that makes every practice session count. Adults also understand music theory as a system — intervals, chord functions, key relationships — rather than memorising isolated facts. That conceptual grasp accelerates everything that follows.

In 30+ years of teaching, about 40% of my private students started with zero prior musical experience. The oldest beginner I've taught was 72. Within three months, she was playing simplified Debussy. The question is never "can I learn at my age?" — it's "do I have 15 minutes a day and the right guidance?"

"I started at 54 with no musical background. After 6 months I can play complete pieces with both hands. The key was having a real teacher who corrected my hand position in the very first session — something no app ever could."
— Andi H., piano student

Live Zoom Lessons — Not a Rigid App

The biggest difference between my approach and the mainstream piano apps is simple: I can see you and hear you. During a Zoom lesson, I watch your hand position, finger curvature, wrist tension, and posture in real time. I can say "relax your thumb" at the exact moment your thumb tenses. An app never catches that — and unreleased tension is the number-one reason adult beginners stall and quit.

Each session takes place at a scheduled time that works for your time zone. I record every lesson so you can rewatch it. There is no platform switching — we meet on Zoom, I share my screen for sheet music and exercises, and you play. That's it.

A Personal Curriculum — No One-Size-Fits-All

You don't need to navigate a bloated app interface or skip between YouTube tutorials. Your curriculum is designed around your goals, your pace, and the music you actually want to play — whether that's classical, pop, jazz, film scores, or all of the above. I adapt the material to your taste and adjust as you progress.

There are no hidden levels to unlock, no ads, and no subscription traps. You purchase a course level once and own it for life. If you want 1-on-1 coaching alongside it, we schedule private sessions on your terms.

Lead Sheets, Chord Progressions & Improvisation — Open to Any Repertoire

This is the foundation of my teaching style. Rather than working through a fixed method book page by page, I teach you to read lead sheets and Real Books, understand chord progressions, and develop improvisation skills from day one — whether on piano, keyboard, or any other instrument.

I am open to any repertoire you love: blues, jazz, pop, film music, modern harmony, Latin, folk, classical sonatas, or your own compositions. You bring the music you want to play; I show you how to play it, how to interpret it, and how to make it your own. The goal is not to follow a syllabus — it is to make you a confident, creative musician on your own terms. Lessons also available for children ages 6+ →

"Lead sheets, chord progressions, and improvisation are the core of my teaching — not as an advanced elective, but as the starting point. You learn to understand music from the inside out, in whatever genre speaks to you."
— Mirco Lieber, MMag.

Classical Repertoire — Beethoven, Bach, Scarlatti & Beyond

Alongside modern styles, I offer comprehensive classical piano training. My concert repertoire spans Scarlatti, Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Haydn, and Piazzolla — and I bring that same interpretative depth to every classical student. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I learn piano as an adult with no musical background?
Yes — that is the normal starting point for most of my adult students. A structured curriculum assumes zero prior knowledge and builds every concept from first principles. The key is having a teacher who can correct your technique in real time, because subtle tension or poor fingering habits are invisible to self-taught methods.
How do online piano lessons work on Zoom?
We connect via Zoom at an agreed time. I see your keyboard and hands through your webcam and can correct hand position, finger technique, and posture in real time — exactly like an in-person lesson. I share my screen for sheet music and exercises. Every session is recorded so you can review it anytime. All you need is a camera, an internet connection, and your instrument.
How much should I practise each day?
Fifteen to twenty minutes of focused daily practice is far more effective than one long session per week. Consistency builds muscle memory and coordination. Even 10 minutes on a busy day is better than skipping entirely.
What if I already tried an app and didn't progress?
Most adults who stall in apps hit a wall because of subtle hand tension, poor fingering choices, or rushing — things only a live teacher can see and fix. In my experience, a single coaching session usually identifies what held you back and gets you moving again within the first lesson.
What kind of piano or keyboard do I need?
Any keyboard with at least 61 full-size, touch-sensitive keys is sufficient to begin. A weighted-key digital piano is ideal but not required. I can advise you on equipment during your free trial lesson — no need to buy anything before we meet.
